Home security is very important, even if you live in an area with a low crime rate. A few simple steps can make your home more secure and can also make a huge amount of difference to your peace of mind.

Especially with Christmas just around the corner, make sure your home is not a target for thieves.

  • Always secure doors (even when you are in the house) and lock windows when you are away
  • A smart video doorbell allows you to view, listen and speak to visitors (even when you’re not at home), and these can be relatively inexpensive to buy and fit
  • Security cameras allow you to see and hear what’s happening inside and outside of your home
  • Light up the garden and driveway so that you feel safe when entering and leaving (a well-lit path will also be a deterrent to burglars)
  • Avoid leaving presents under your Christmas tree if they are visible from windows or doors, instead hide them in a secure place, such as the loft
  • Keep valuables, such as laptops, away from windows and out of sight, and invest in a safe for jewellery or other expensive items
  • Having a visible security alarm box on the outside of your house can help to deter intruders (additionally some home insurers offer a discount on approved alarms if they are maintained regularly)
  • Ensure your fencing around your property is in good condition and gates are secured
  • Do not leave spare keys in obvious places. Avoid putting them under the mat or under the bright red plant pot at the front door. If needed, a key safe, fitted in a discrete location, can help store keys securely
  • Secure outbuildings and garages and if you do keep bikes in them, doubly secure them with a lock or chain
  • Empty homes are always a target so if you are going out, whether for the evening or a prolonged period of time, consider leaving a light on or using a timer to control your lights and appliances
  • If you have recently bought your home, get to know your neighbours – you will feel safer at home if you know your environment and who is around you

Your home should be a safe retreat, so make sure you don’t get caught by surprise and do what you can to make your home as safe as possible and give you peace of mind.
